Farscape is more bleak humor space (soap) opera, compared to ST:TNG which is more about teamwork, solving problems, diplomacy in space SG1 is all about imagining other worlds their allures dangers; Supernatural is about trying and failing but keeping on fighting anyway; Buffy is all about growing up

I forget what the reason given was for Farscape, but in general it's because the people at the network thought they knew better how to introduce a show to an audience Fox famously did this with Firefly by skipping the pilot entirely and going straight to the train job episode because they thought it would be more exciting for new people
